Anatomy of an Anecnote

Anecnote is a platform that lets you store and organise your notes beautifully. Its main goal is to help you easily find relevant notes when you need them. To achieve this, you can attach a lot of metadata to each note, which is then searchable with our powerful Smart Views filtering system.

Categories

You can add each note to a broad category. You can use these as you wish but they would generally be used to describe the type of note. The options are completely customisable but some of the defaults include: Advice, Anecdote, Fact, Idea, Memory, Quote and Review.

Areas

Again, you can use Areas however you like but they would generally be used to describe the note's context. That could be Family or Personal, or Home or Work (or Finance, Health etc….). Your areas of interest will dictate how best to use this option.

Tags

Tags allow you to attach yet further information to describe the content of your note. You can add as many as you like to each note. Examples might be 'Funny', 'Interesting', 'Inspirational', 'Nature' etc.

People

If your notes relate to people then you can attach that information too. This way you could filter (for example) for all 'Memory' notes that involve 'Jane' etc.

Source

If the content of the note has been taken from somewhere (or someone) then you can note that here so that you remember. This could be (for example) a person, or a book or a link to a website.

Starred

Star your favourite notes to add them to a Favourites list

Action required

If a note needs some kind of action / follow up then mark it as such. We have a dedicated list for these notes too!

In Settings you can control which (if any) of these pieces of metadata you want to see in the notes list. So you can go for a minimal look whilst still packing all of this information into your notes!

Saved Views

Anecnote's superpower

Via our Standard views and your own Custom views you can have Anecnote 'surface' collections of related notes, pulled together by combining and filtering on the notes' metadata.
image
Anecnote’s ‘Custom views’ offer a flexible way to create note lists by filtering based on metadata. Unlike the ‘Standard Views’ that provide quick access to specific categories, ‘Custom views’ allow you to tailor note lists to suit your needs. This versatility enables you to create views for various purposes, making it a powerful tool for efficient note organisation. Let’s explore a few examples of how you might use custom views:

Health records

If you’re ill or have an upcoming operation, log all your interactions with healthcare professionals so you can access them when needed. For instance, create a custom view for ‘My hip replacement’ that pulls together all Record category notes tagged with ‘Hip operation’. This way, you can quickly see who said what and when.

Top reviews

If you use Anecnote to capture reviews of films or TV that you have watched, or books that you have read, then you could set up a custom view for 'My top reviews' that would return any Review category notes for any Entertainment area that has a tag of 4 or 5 stars.

Date night

If you have ever been concerned about filling awkward silences then have a collection of notes to hand from your Anecdote category that are tagged as 'Funny' or 'Interesting'.

Your children's activities

As time passes, it’s easy to forget details about your children’s activities. Use Anencote to secure memories from school plays or Sports days. Create a custom view that combines these memories for a nostalgic trip down memory lane whenever you want.

Custom views can make use of AND/OR logic to create complex filters based on Category, Area, People, Tags, Source, Starred and Action required.

General

There are many note-taking apps available, but most focus on productivity or the writing process. Anencote, however, stands out as a note-taking app with a unique focus. Its real strength lies in its ability to serve as a repository for your thoughts, memories, stories, and other fleeting ideas that might otherwise get lost in the daily grind. It’s a memory manager, a second brain, and an aide-memoire all rolled into one. Anencote excels in these areas, making it an unrivalled tool for note-taking. It’s free to download and test, so why not give it a try and see if you agree?

Support

Yes - we have extensive documentation over on our Knowledge Base site.

In-App purchases

Anecnote is completely free to download and try. The number of notes that you can add though is limited to 10 and the number of Custom smart views that you can add is limited to 1.

There are 3 in-app purchase options: a monthly or annual subscription or a one-off purchase. An active subscription (or the one-off purchase) unlocks the following features:

  • Unlimited notes
  • Unlimited Custom smart views
  • Ability to import notes (from a CSV file)
  • Ability to duplicate a note
  • Ability to duplicate a smart view

You will keep all the notes that you have added but if that is more than 10 then you will not be able to add any new ones. You will also keep all your smart views but again not be able to add any new ones. You will also lose the ability to import/duplicate notes.

Data management

Yes - iCloud/Cloudkit sync is enabled by default ensuring that your notes are safely backed up and synced across devices. These notes are private to you and stored in your own iCloud account.

We have an import feature that can accept a csv file. The requirements for the csv file are detailed in the app. Please note that importing notes is dependent on the app being unlocked via an in-app purchase.

You can export all notes to:

  • CSV
  • Markdown (with all notes collated into a single document)

You can export any single note to:

  • Markdown (with any metadata tags added as YAML frontmatter)

Additional export options are planned.

Roadmap

We are just at the beginning of our journey with Anecnote and have a whole lot planned, including, but not limited to:
